SocialWorks’ 2021 profile traces the modern outreach to All Kids Matter, when Michael and Pamela Airhart began preparing sandwiches and then hot meals from home to serve people in need.
Taste of Chicago changed the target.
Airhart has repeatedly told the story of seeing people experiencing homelessness turned away while leftover food was headed for the trash. Taste for the Homeless grew from that moment.
SocialWorks joins the vision.
A direct message to Chance the Rapper helped connect the work with SocialWorks, expanding Taste for the Homeless into large seasonal events with food, clothing, grooming and resources.
Chicago made room at the table.
City of Chicago DCASE, SocialWorks and Airhart partnered on Summer Fest 2021. Organizers expected roughly 700 shelter residents for an afternoon built around food, culture and community.
The story reaches national television.
The Jennifer Hudson Show introduced the mission to a wider audience. The official Taste for the Homeless site also features recognition tied to a President Joe Biden Lifetime Achievement Award presentation.
