D.A. Smart’s story reaches back to Chicago hip-hop before streaming made geography optional. His career moved through breakdancing, battle rap, a major-label deal, C.W.A.L., The Legendary Traxster, the Million Man March, independent ownership and a catalog that still carries the city in its voice.
Introduced to hip-hop in the mid-1980s, D.A. Smart developed a reputation as a formidable battle emcee and later signed with RCA. After leaving the major-label system, he pursued independence and connected with producer The Legendary Traxster and C.W.A.L., the Chicago label family associated with artists including Twista and Do or Die.
His 1990s history also includes the Million Man March-era single “One in a Million” and an appearance on “Where Ya At?” alongside a lineup that included Ice-T, Ice Cube, Chuck D, RZA, Mobb Deep and others. The next chapter put ownership at the center: Terror Records, Control the Mic and a continuing commitment to artist development and neighborhood creativity.
